With your starting army, focus on taking the welsh towns, make friends with Wessex and Northumbria, then once you've conquered Wales, turn your attention to Ireland. Your units are really cheap at the start (like 45 upkeep per turn), so you need to recruit a small army to hold chester and another 1 at london. I just did a blind legendary play through as Mercia and won the campaign without a single defeat and only 19 battles fought. However, by doing so, I leave the North-West unprotected and so thus it gets invaded and occupied. My first army is put at the border at the West, as they otherwise invide to take the fight to my capital. I have to put a general in London as otherwise my tributuary state (!) sacks/razes it (causing famine). Started 3 times anew (on Normal, mind you) as Mercia, and I'm losing so fast on so many grounds. I'm not sure why Mercia is supposed to be easy in comparison to say Danes etc.
